“Well, there’s been more scrutiny over the camps recently, and I just kind of...” Cam trailed off, eyebrows lowered, staring at the ground. She abruptly pressed her mouth closed, then looked up, nodding. “You know what, let’s go tonight.”

“Tonight?”

“Why not? You’re right, I—when you came back that was really exciting and there’s been so much going on I kind of…forgot? I’m such a bad friend. She’s missed you too. Tonight.” Cam punctuated her statement with a sharp nod, and Ava smiled.

“Okay.”

That night, Ava found herself hurrying to follow Cam as she ducked past the tents and walked straight towards the woods.

“Follow me.” Rather than walking the path towards the training area, Cam led them straight into the actual forest, winding through the trees.

“There’s no path over?” Ava asked, quieting significantly as Cam whirled and held a finger to her lips.

“Technically, we’re not really supposed to go over to the potentials camp once we’ve gone through the Change. But everyone sneaks back at least once, we just have to not get caught,” Cam whispered, a mischievous twinkle in her eye.

Ava followed her silently through the forest, ducking through the trees and freezing at the sound of any snapping twigs or rustling leaves. When they emerged from the forest again, Ava stared at three neat, colorful rows of large camping tents.

“Okay, they should be coming back from dinner soon. We just have to blend in.” Cam paused, waiting.

After a few tense, quiet minutes, a massive group began walking down near the tree line. As they passed, Ava attempted to count but got to the forties before she gave up. There were many more humans than she’d seen of the fairies. Something about them caught her gaze, pinging as wrong in her brain. She glanced from face to face, studying them all keenly, attempting to name the issue. She nearly missed when Cam stepped from the tree line into the throng of people, pulling Ava with her.

“This way.” Cam wiggled through the group with a smile and practiced ease. Ava stared at each person. They seemed dirtier, smelled worse, but she knew that was because they did more physical work than the trainees. Then it clicked. Her gaze caught on their physical blemishes—acne, sparse hair, chapped lips. She knew what they were but had no memory of seeing anyone with less than healthy physical features.

“Gotcha!” Cam muttered, just as the humans reached the tents and began to disperse. She pulled Ava towards a tall girl with a head of corkscrew brown curls.

“Marley!” Cam hissed. The girl turned around. She had smooth skin compared to everyone else around her, freckles, and large brown eyes that grew even wider when she saw Cam. The second the girl saw Ava, she stopped, slapped both hands over her mouth, stared for a moment, and then launched forward to pull Ava into a hug.

“You really are back!” She spoke quietly into Ava’s ear and didn’t seem in any way perturbed that Ava had yet to hug her back.
